Learn Defects of vision and their correction
In the CBSE Class 10 Science chapter "The Human Eye and the Colourful World," understanding how we see our surroundings is fascinating, but it is equally important to learn what happens when our eyes lose their perfect focus. Defects of vision, also known as refractive errors, occur when the eye's crystalline lens fails to accommodate properly or when the physical shape of the eyeball changes. As a result, the light rays entering the eye do not converge exactly on the retina, which is essential for forming a sharp and clear image, leading to blurred sight.
There are two major defects of vision commonly tested in board exams: Myopia (near-sightedness) and Hypermetropia (far-sightedness). In Myopia, the eyeball is elongated or the lens has excessive curvature, causing parallel rays from distant objects to converge in front of the retina. This is corrected using a concave lens of appropriate negative power, which artificially diverges the rays before they enter the eye. Conversely, in Hypermetropia, the eyeball is too short or the lens is too flat, causing rays from nearby objects to converge behind the retina. This defect is corrected by placing a converging convex lens of positive power in front of the eye, which helps bring the focal point forward onto the retina.
The infographic above visually demonstrates these two main visual defects and their respective optical corrections side-by-side. On the left, you can see the Myopic Eye, where incoming parallel rays from a distant object converge too early, stopping before they reach the retina. By placing a diverging concave lens in front of the eye, the incoming light rays are spread out slightly so that the eye's natural lens can focus them flawlessly onto the retina. On the right, the diagram illustrates the Hypermetropic Eye, where rays originating from a nearby object (marked as 'O') do not converge steeply enough, creating a focal point virtually behind the retina. Inserting a converging convex lens provides the extra optical power needed to pre-bend the light rays, thereby bringing the focal point forward onto the retina. In your CBSE Class 10 Board exams, you will frequently be asked to draw these exact ray diagrams to explain how corrective lenses manipulate focal lengths to restore normal vision.
Mastering ray diagrams and the physics behind the human eye can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when trying to memorize light convergence, accommodation, and lens powers. If you are struggling to understand refractive defects or other chapters in physics, expert help is just a click away. Connect with highly qualified, verified Class 10 Science tutors on UrbanPro.
