Learn Energy flow in an ecosystem
Welcome to the "Our Environment" chapter of CBSE Class 10 Science! One of the most fascinating and exam-relevant concepts in this chapter is the Energy flow in an ecosystem. Think of an ecosystem as a giant, bustling city where energy is the ultimate currency. Every living organism needs this energy to survive, grow, run, and reproduce. In an ecosystem, energy continuously moves from one organism to another, creating a chain of life. The ultimate source of this energy is the Sun. Plants capture sunlight to make food, and this energy is then passed on to animals when they eat the plants, and further along to other animals, forming what we call a food chain.
The flow of energy through an ecosystem has two critical characteristics: it is strictly unidirectional (one-way) and it follows the famous 10% Law proposed by Raymond Lindeman. Unidirectional means that energy captured by autotrophs (producers) does not revert back to the Sun, and the energy passed to herbivores does not come back to producers. Furthermore, as energy moves from one trophic level (feeding level) to the next, a massive amount is used up for metabolic processes like respiration, digestion, and movement, while a significant portion is lost as heat to the environment. According to the 10% Law, only about 10% of the energy from one trophic level is successfully transferred and stored in the body of the organisms at the next level. This rapid, continuous loss limits food chains to usually just 3 or 4 steps.
Take a look at the energy pyramid diagram above, which visually breaks down this concept step-by-step. Notice the Sun at the top left providing 1,000,000 Joules (J) of energy; plants (Producers) only capture about 1% of this available solar energy, giving them a starting pool of 10,000 J. As we move up to the Primary Consumers (herbivores like deer), only 10% of that energy—1,000 J—is transferred. The next step takes us to the Secondary Consumers (small carnivores) receiving just 100 J, and finally, the Tertiary Consumers (top predators like lions) get a mere 10 J. This shrinking energy pool highlights exactly why higher trophic levels support fewer individuals and why food chains rarely exceed four steps. In your CBSE Class 10 board exams, you are frequently asked to draw this energy pyramid, explain the 10% law using numerical examples just like this one, and justify why energy flow is strictly unidirectional.
Mastering concepts like the energy flow, food webs, biological magnification, and trophic levels is crucial for scoring high marks in your board exams.
