The ASCII code, American Standard Code of Information Interchange, is a character encoding standard for electronic devices.
Every letter, digit and special symbols must have an integer value associated with it, and the computer only deals with numbers (in binary representation specifically).
So, with a standard representation for each symbol computers can communicate with each other because they are using the same code.
