In practical world one can smell a perfume form any distance, but the concentration of the perfume decreases as the target is at long distance. The particle or molecules in the perfume disperse once they are out of the bottle. They scatter at high speed that if there is no medium to hold them the smell is almost feeble. Due to the equilibrium of matter in environment one cannot get the smell of a perfume for long distance targets. Equilibrium is a phenomenon in which the particles gets disperse to match with the concentration in the atmosphere. Simply take an example of salt in water. Salt dissolves in water and is distribute evenly to all the parts in a glass. Phenomenon similar this happens with the perfume also. The capacity to detect smell also plays a major role. Humans cannot smell RDX however dogs can smell. It is the same with drugs and other materials. They have a very good detection capability which makes them more efficient than humans in detection of smell.
