First of all we need to understand the objective for learning a language- is it for an academic purpose or just for conversing- Spoken language. For the Spoken language TV is good , but without sub titles. One can be exposed to different dialects and learn the functions of a language very quickly. But for academics ,reading books, newspapers , magazines etc is a must, but don't do away totally with TV.Listen to the news channels.this serves two purposes. You can learn the correct pronunciation and diction of a language and broaden your general knowledge at the same time.Listening is the first step to learning a language. Don't watch serials.Attention gets diverted from learning.Watch documentaries and news for half an hour, but spend 3 hours on reading and writing traditionally from books and other print material.Always have a dictionary by your side for quick reference of word meaning and pronunciation of a new word.Play scrabble and do newspaper crosswords to increase your vocabulary.Learning a language need not be a drudgery of only pouring over books. You can take a break to play word building too.Heard of 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy'?So don't become a Jack.Good luck with your language learning.
