The way I have learnt Reiki and the way I teach it, the practice of Reiki is divided into three levels: First Level, Second Level, and Reiki Master training, with plenty of time for practice between two subsequent levels. This is the way the International Reiki Alliance teaches the system of Reiki. The International Reiki Alliance is a group of Reiki masters trained by Mrs Hawayo Takata, one of the grand masters of Reiki. She learned it from Dr Chujiro Hayashi, who was trained by the founder of the Reiki system Dr Mikao Usui. Mrs Takata's grand daughter, Ms Phyllis Lei Furumoto, continues to lead the Reiki Alliance to this day. They have established a clear protocol for learning Reiki, which proceeds slowly and with a solid emphasis on practice on every level.
