While it is creditable that you are thinking to learn DevOps, which has no connection to what you are currently doing, it would be some disruption. You will need to know the entire automation pipeline and learn the DevOps tools and techniques.  
If you want to leverage your current experience of testing, Big Data ETL testing is another option. This way, you can claim that its a natural progression, but you would remain in testing stream, the difference is you are in a more lucrative field.

The answer is yes. In this day and age, you must know a little bit of scripting and programming. There is no harm in learning and attempting. You have everything to gain.

By default, Hive queries or code gets convereted to mapreduce code. When you run hive, you can see mappers and reducers in your log. But its possible to run hive in 3 modes

3. Spark

Instead of creating mapreduce jobs, now it runs on spark cluster and leverages in-memory computing.
